     Major Accountabilities & Responsibilities

    As a Controller you will be tasked with driving the full P&L management of key growth customers, and the emphasis will very much be on you with support to show how you can deliver and profitably grow the business. The categories in which the role operates brings both challenges of leading Brand and Category initiatives requirements and also a real “Intellectually Stretching” environment where strength of character is key. Additionally, you will be expected to work with UK Marketing & Corporate stakeholders in developing the Retail Strategy. 
     
     
    The key drivers of the role are follows:
    Ability to Network & Influence throughout the Retail Matrix Space (Supply, Marketing, Finance) 
    Application of Category Management; influence the necessary strategies to deliver category/profit growth by delivery to the consumer needs 
    Negotiate & develop throughout the year annual Joint Business Plans (JBPs) 
    Drive distribution of existing and new products 
    Manage product mix to maximise margin 
    Manage effective communication of Brand & Category Solutions 
    Execute all points of purchase to the highest standard e.g. store, on-line, print, events
    Negotiate all elements of pricing, terms and promotions within Business guidelines.
    Fully execute & post-evaluate promotional activity.
    Ensure that activity supports central brand direction 
    Exercise Trade Spend control and process adherence
    Manage effective communication of Brand plans to customer base
    Add value outside of the job description via initiatives, creative ideas & special projects
     
    Candidate Requirements
    Relevant Candidates will already be operating at National Accounts Level within a Branded player in the consumer goods industry and will possess either Retail, FMCG or Consumer Durable experience and will fully appreciate the current challenges facing suppliers within a “tough” retail market. Ideally candidates will have some level of exposure to one or more of the top national retailers in the UK and will be confident translating intellectually robust Commercial Strategies. 
    As our client is growing rapidly, it would be advantageous for the candidate to have people management experience & possibly, marketing or trade marketing experience.
    The candidate needs to have the capability to progress further within the business as it continues to expand. This is vital as is the adaptability for the candidate to work alongside the MD; to be developed & nurtured in order to rapidly progress to the next level(s) within the Customer Development function. Hence, a zest for rapidly absorbing, learning & implementing is a necessity.  
    Ideal & Desirable Experience
    Proven track record of leading successful negotiations
    Proven track record of developing & implementing successful JBP’s
    Demonstrated experience building and/or significantly upgrading sales capability including appropriate performance tracking processes and reward mechanisms with other colleagues
    Experience of working cross-functionally within focused Marketing & category management, Finance & Operations.
    Broader commercial experience; an effective operator as part of a team 
    A graduate degree holder and/or of degree calibre.

    Critical Competencies for Success
    Leadership: an assertive, yet not overly aggressive, team orientated leadership style and an ability to appropriately “challenge” and positively influence toward a common goal. A demonstrated results orientation and a winning “can do” attitude. While outcome and results focused, understands the balance between what must be accomplished and how best to accomplish it. A tolerance for ambiguity inherent in a rapidly changing environment and an ability to prioritise and operate across a matrix of functions and teams. Will attach high importance to intense market and customer focus.
    Strategic Thinking & Operational execution: The successful candidate will have strong strategic thinking skills, utilising facts, data and experience in order to develop breakthrough sales strategy. S/he will not only be able to manage on conceptual/strategic level, but also be hands-on in terms of operational implementation. S/he will be accustomed to measuring success through numbers, metrics and reporting.
    Functional Expertise: Will need to bring a complete skill set in Customer Development into the business; proven success in managing trade relationships, negotiating at mid or senior levels and being seen as a mid to senior level operator in the field who references well with past colleagues, managers and the trade. Hence, understands & applies breadth & depth of contact strategy via Joint Business Plans.
    •Strong focus on measurement and return on investment as a source of business advantage.
    Action-orientation: Behaviourally, s/he will need to possess an abiding sense of urgency and pace; demonstrated prioritisation skills and a strong, personal commitment to delivering exceptional results within a fast paced, fast changing environment. Challenging, competitive and ambitious; comfortable operating in a very transparent, metrics driven business. S/he will enjoy a culture of space, freedom and high accountability.
